When Do You Need to Buy Glasses or Prescription Spectacles?
The simple answer is that almost all people will have prescribed spectacles or some form of eyecare correction over the course of their lives.
The two most common forms of eye correction requiring spectacles or glasses are known as long and short sightedness. Both of these conditions are derived from some defect in the size of the eye itself and its inability to accommodate the correct focusing of incoming light onto the retina.
Both of these conditions can occur from early childhood therefore requiring diagnosis at a young age and the fitting of glasses by a trained and qualified optometrist. It is crucial that children and young adults are tested for new spectacles frequently as it is common for the shape of the eye to change dramatically at this age therefore requiring new spectacles prescription or new lenses in their glasses.
Of course it can be difficult to determine if very young children need spectacles and so it is important to look out for any symptoms of vision distress. In many countries including the United Kingdom, although it is now common to buy glasses and prescription spectacles online, children and youths to the age of seventeen must have glasses prescribed in person by a qualified optician.
The rationale for this is that it is crucially important to fit the right glasses prescription with a relatively high frequency during the individual’s growth phases. The ophthalmologist will be looking for signs that the young patient has difficulty in focusing on objects either far away or very close up. They will also be asking questions such as “any evidence of headaches with abnormal frequency?”, any symptoms such as watering of the eyes, frequent blinking or evidence or history of squinting during activities particularly indoors.
The most common eye condition that necessitates wearing glasses which eventually affects the vast majority of the adult population is called presbyopia. This is sometimes confused with Long sightedness, but it is caused by different mechanisms. As you grow older the eye starts to lose its ability to focus on objects that are close; it is generally believed that this is caused by a loss of elasticity within the lens of the eye and as a consequence a diminished ability of the lens to change its curvature to accommodate a change in focus of light onto the retina. Although there are some surgical treatments available for this condition, the vast majority of people just recognize it as a natural consequence of aging and address it by wearing reading glasses.
It would be nice to think that individuals who have tolerated myopia in their younger years would benefit from and offset in focusing ability as they age and acquire presbyopia, hence possibly not requiring reading spectacles-but unfortunately this does not happen as the myopia remains and say also now require spectacles for reading as well. This is because the physical mechanisms for the two conditions are not complementary and so no corrective offset for vision is available.
There are different symptoms associated with different ocular problems. It is important to recognize them and to become sensitive to the frequency. None of these symptoms will make you vision worse (or better), but realizing that they apply to you should motivate you to have your eyes tested by a professional – you will enjoy a better lifestyles afterwards.
