10 Tips for Clearing 2011
What is Clearing?
To start with, let’s define what clearing is and who is eligible for this scheme. Clearing allows students to apply for courses that still have empty places. The students eligible are those, who got rejected from the universities they chose, who missed the UCAS deadline, or who have declined the places that universities offered.
Clearing can often seem like a bit of a scramble. It’s important not to rush in. Follow these ten simple rules for the Undergraduate Clearing 2011 that will help you to make the right choices and find your clearing places.
- First of all, be honest about your chances of securing your first choice. If you think you might end up in Clearing, do some research via university websites before results day.
- If your results didn’t go to plan, speak to the teacher that is responsible for UCAS applications. They will have advice around the Clearing process and can help you.
- After collecting your results, you can confirm your eligibility for Clearing via the UCAS website. Your Track page will have the information you need.
- Use the UCAS website, The Independent, The Independent on Sunday or The Guardian to get the full clearing list.
- Remember you can apply for a completely different course at a totally different university if you wish. Check out open days and websites to help you choose.
- Research the course and the universities. Think about reasons why they should take you. Put a positive spin on your results and think about relevant experience.
- You must take responsibility for your own future and talk to universities yourself. They may ask questions about interests and motivation that only you can answer.
- Don’t forget the university needs to have offered you a provisional place. Don’t just enter the number of a course you like. You must contact them first.
- Wait for confirmation. The university and UCAS will contact you with conformation. You can always try another option if unsuccessful.
- Confirm with your new university that you’ll have access to accommodation. Then it’s time to relax and celebrate.
When does Clearing start?
Clearing starts in August, when the A-level results are announced, and goes on until the end of September. Please note, this year clearing starts on August 18.
If you happen to get into Clearing, do not get upset. It is always worth taking a risk, as one never knows how clearing can end up. Sometimes students find those courses that suit them even better than their first choice!
