The treatment group was taught self-hypnosis techniques, relaxation before the operation, while the control group received usual care. People who were taught self-hypnosis were significantly more relaxed after surgery compared with the control group. drug requirements for pain were also significantly lower for treatment group.
Therapeutic Touch
Another research team studied the effect of therapeutic touch compared with a back massage in the level of anxiety in 105 institutionalized elderly. A double-blind, three-group experimental design was used. . The anxiety level of subjects who received therapeutic touch was significantly lower than for those receiving a back rub without therapeutic touch. The researchers suggested that therapeutic touch has some potential to improve the quality of life in this population.
