DSquared Sunglasses – Twinned with Style
DSquared has made its name as a favourite with celebrities who flaunt its items at glitzy catwalk shows known for its impressive theatrics. A-list stars that have been spotted wearing the brand include Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and Lenny Kravitz, to name just a few. Although the brand is prestigious, it still a relatively young brand and doesn’t create the same kind of impact as more established competitors but it’s quickly getting there and definitely offers something different. Although still brimming with quality, DSquared manage to blend obvious luxury with unique character and are regarded by many as a symbol of status.
Behind the distinctive name lie a designing duo, Dean and Dan Catenacci, identical twin brothers and the youngest of nine children, who established their successful fashion label in 1994 with the release of a men’s collection and then later a women’s collection. This included apparel from flamboyant runway dresses to casual jeans, recently extending to a successful sunglasses collection for both genders. The brothers were born in Canada but are of Italian descent, returning to the country of their ancestors to work for the famous Gianni Versace label, which is still displayed as an influence in many designs. Their first store was opened in Milan in 2007.
The brand received worldwide recognition for its cowboy inspired costumes in Madonna’s ‘Don’t Tell Me’ video, which spurred on their popularity as a brand worth paying attention to. In 2008 Dean and Dan signed an agreement to design sunglasses with Marcolin, an Italian sunglasses manufacturer. The fact that the designers behind the DSquared brand are twins could have helped create more of an in sync team, sharing similar visions and producing a dynamic team that have taken the fashion industry by storm.
DSquared sunglasses definitely show Italian influence in their designs. Their intricate frames that sport extra gold filigree detailing, lightweight lenses and a palette of burgundy, gunmetal, walnut gold and bronze make them a creation straight from the fashion conscious heart of Italy.
DSquared’s men’s collection manages to combine masculinity with sophistication. Delicate frames with a sturdy look allow for sunglasses that pack a punch in both the style stakes and functionality department.
The female collection incorporates more curves and in some cases chunkier frames for more impact. Their lens colours follow a spectrum of colours from the more obvious pinks to greens, blues and blacks. Cateye models are a clear example of how femininity can be incorporated into a range with positive results. Thick hexagon shaped frames are another example of DSquared’s experimentation with style that separates them from other brands. However, more angular models are not absent from the collection, as women experiment with bolder looks that makes the collection eclectic and exciting.
The wearer of a pair of DSquared sunglasses becomes instantly stylish and noticeable, as with any item that DSquared designs. Dan and Dean have created a brand that is infused with strong Italian style, something that comes naturally to the pair of them.
