Pucci – Fashionably Unique
Emilio Pucci was born in 1914 into one ofFlorence’s oldest and most noble families. He grew up in thePucciPalace, where he would spend a considerable portion of his life, including many of his years as a fashion designer. Pucci was a keen sportsman and scholar. Being from a distinguished background, he attended universities across the globe. This included theUniversityofMilan, theUniversityofGeorgiainAthensand theUniversityofFlorence, where he earned his doctorate in political science.
Known to be a dedicated sportsman, Pucci travelled with the Italian Olympic team to the 1932 Winter Olympics inLake Placid. Though he did not compete, he continued to progress as a talented skier. In 1935, he won a skiing scholarship toReed College,Oregon. In 1938, he joined the Italian Air Force and served as a torpedo bomber pilot. By the time he left, he had reached the rank of captain, and was decorated for his valour and bravery.
During his time on the ski team at Reed, Pucci designed many of their outfits. His first taste of fame as a designer came in 1947, when his designs for a female friend’s ski clothes were photographed by someone working for Harper’s Bazaar. In the early 1950s, Pucci opened a boutique inRome, which increased his popularity as a designer. His range soon included swimwear, lingerie, silk scarves and sunglasses. Famously, Marilyn Monroe was buried in one of his dresses.
By the 60s, his popularity and influence was had reached a new high, and he was asked to take on a number of high profile projects. One of these projects was to update the outfits of the cabin crew at Braniff International Airways, for which he received critical acclaim. He also designed the iconic ‘three bird’ logo for the Apollo 15 space mission.
Pucci died in 1992, aged 78. His fashion legacy lives on, because the company was taken over by his daughter, Laudomia. In 2000, 67 percent of the company was bought by the French Louis Vuitton-Moet-Hennessy Group, while the remaining 33 percent still belongs to the Pucci family. Today, the company employs around 240 people, and its revenue in 2010 stood at $48.1million for the year.
The Pucci brand has a dedicated celebrity following, and has seen a number of A-list celebrities sporting the Pucci name. This list includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lopez, Eva Longoria, Penelope Cruz and Kylie Minogue.
