New Meds For ADHD – How Are they Different ?
New meds for ADHD? If you Googled that, you were probably disappointed, as I was. I cannot believe that doctors are still, in the third millennium, prescribing good old fashioned “speed” or amphetmanines for children with ADHD. It is also a Class 2 drug which means simply that it is strictly controlled by law so if you are a student who uses it to study all night without a prescription, then you are liable for a very big fine or imprisonment, depending which state you reside in.
Don’t be fooled by the drug companies’ hype. New ADHD medication is a mirage. Things may have improved as regards dosage as regards extended release, the invention of patches but we are basically struggling with a variety of amphetamines, anti-depressants and non-stimulant drugs such as Strattera.
Read the ADHD blogs and it is the same old story. Nothing has changed. There are no new meds for ADHD. Children are plagued with side effects and while sometimes their symptoms will improve, such as being less hyperactive, more focused and less distracted, there are no long term benefits. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has been like the gold rush for drug companies and they still cannot come up with an effective cure that will not turn our children into zombies. Whether it is Concerta, Adderall, or just plain old Ritalin, children’s appetites are affected negatively. They are put on other medication to make them eat. Have you heard of Remeron ? This is to make children eat. New ADHD medication is just a whole list of new names for mind altering drugs.
The drug companies have failed to produce new meds for ADHD which will help children to cope with inattention, restlessness, fidgeting, depression and anxiety, not to mention insomnia. Parents, thanks to the Internet, now know that ADHD medication is not the answer. It can only help in the short term and very often produces a whole list of side effects in the children who just cannot take the medicine. Not to mention the risks they are under as regards other teenagers trying to get their sticky little hands on your children’s meds for purely illicit purposes.
ADHD behaviour therapy has now found favour with some people in the medical establishment. At least the children will not have to cope with ineffectual medication and nasty side effects. There is also a lot of attention now too on ADHD natural homeopathic cures. Thousands of parents have found that as there are no new meds for ADHD, this is the only way to go.
