What Are Polarized Sunglasses?

You may be thinking to yourself right now that you have never heard of polarized sunglasses. This guideline will provide you with an in-depth overview of these glasses, including what they are used for and how they work. When you are shopping around for these, you will likely come across both vertical and horizontal polarizing lenses, both of which will be discussed in this guideline. If you are in the market for a new pair of polarized sunglasses, stores that you may want to check out include Oakley and PacSun.

Polarized Sunglasses Defined

Simply put, polarized sunglasses are designed to reduce glare. If you have a pair of regular glasses, put them on and look at surfaces like glass, water or snow. You should notice that a glare is produced off of those shiny surfaces. Polarized ones will reduce that glare, which means they are great for activities that require you to see more clearly such as fishing, sports and driving. You are going to pay more for these than you would for conventional ones, but the extra money is worth improving your eyesight. Unlike the conventional type, polarized glasses will not dim your entire field of vision. Instead, they will simply selectively block out glare to make it easier for you to see.

How Polarized Sunglasses Work

As you may or may not know, light has many different properties. One of the properties that light has is called polarization. When light bounces off of surfaces like glass, water or snow, a wave is produced that bounces in many different directions. That wave then orients itself along an axis, which causes the glare that you see when looking at shiny surfaces when you have glasses on. Generally speaking, most polarized sunglasses will contain vertical polarizing lenses. The axis that the wave normally orients itself with is the horizontal axis. The purpose of having vertical polarizing lenses is to still provide you with a full field of vision while reducing the brightness of the light waves that are produced through polarization. However, many 3-D glasses will use horizontal polarizing lenses because they want to enhance the glare that is created by the light waves.

Uses of Polarized Sunglasses

As previously mentioned, wearing these is a great idea when you are fishing, playing sports or driving. However, these glasses also have many other uses. Unfortunately, they will not work when the sun is directly overhead or low to the horizon. The reason for that is the waves that are produced from the reflected light align themselves away from the traditional horizontal configuration. If you have ever stared at a glare before, then you know that it can hurt your eyes due to straining. That is where polarized sunglasses come into play. Many people will experiment with them in an attempt to align the lenses with the glare itself. This means the entire glare will be removed from your eyesight, but none of the actual light will be filtered out.
