Occupational Prescription Glasses
Occupational prescription glasses are special varifocal glasses that are designed for specific jobs or hobbies, but are generally not for regular and daily use. These prescription glasses are special because of the unusual placement of the near, intermediate and far vision zones in the lenses, to make certain tasks easier.
There are various kinds of occupational prescription glasses which help you to deal with various situations:
i) Double – D lenses for overhead near work: The Double – D design is an example of prescription glasses that has a D – shaped bifocal segment at the bottom of the lens and an upside – down “D – Seg” at the top of the lens. The rest of the lens area provides distance correction.
They are the perfect occupational prescription glasses for librarians or mail clerks who routinely need to file and read items overhead.
ii) E – D lenses with emphasis on intermediate zones: A unique set of prescription glasses, E – D trifocal comes with a distance correction along the top half of the lens, separated from the intermediate correction which is located in the bottom half of the lens. A D – shaped segment with near correction is also present in the lower half of the lens of these prescription glasses.
The E – D trifocal is suitable for someone who needs a clear, wide field of view at an intermediate distance and who also needs to see clearly both close up and in the distance.
iii) Multifocal lenses for reading and near vision tasks: Common multifocal lenses sometimes can be converted to lenses for occupational prescription glasses when design changes are made to the height of the bifocal or trifocal segments.
These occupational prescription glasses are not suitable for tasks such as driving but are an excellent choice for pharmacists who spend most of the work day reading small print on the labels.
iv) Special prescription glasses for golfers: Round – top bifocals can be used to create occupational prescription glasses called “golfer’s bifocal”. The small, round reading segment is placed low and in the outside corner of one lens only. These prescription glasses are quickly becoming popular as owning more than one pair of glasses has become a regular concept among many users.
