Using steel in the construction of buildings has been an increasingly popular option for centuries.
Steel frames made the first skyscraper possible and since then it has enabled us to build bigger, higher and more impressive structures, opened up a whole new level of opportunity in the field of architecture and design and pushed us to create ever more spectacular buildings.
Its popularity is down to many factors. Firstly, a building with a steel structure as opposed to a more traditional timber one for example, is significantly safer. It’s not susceptible to insect infestation or rotting and will not be affected by moisture build up that could contribute to damage. You’re also ensured that the frame of the building will survive in the event of a fire.
A steel structure also makes the building more resistant to the effects of aggressive weather. They are more likely to withstand hurricanes and torrential rain making them economically appealing, particularly in problem geographical zones, as it eliminates the possibility of having to rebuild completely.
This method of building also allows for much greater freedom when designing. Much more can be achieved due to the strength and versatility of the material. Buildings can be much more elaborate and architecture can be pushed in new and exciting directions.
It is also a surprisingly cost effective way of building. A steel structure can be erected much faster than with using other materials, light steel is easy to transport and work with and you are less likely to accumulate surplus materials and waste money as you might with timber or brick constructions.
It also makes adding levels or extensions to a building much cheaper and quicker. There is no added worry about affecting the stability of the structure by adding or removing walls. It’s much easier to simply add what is needed onto the existing building.
The environmental advantages are also important to remember when considering a steel building. Much of the steel used is recycled and if and when a building is demolished, the same steel can be used again. With the growing population and business needs materials are in great demand and in some cases shortages; building with timber might soon be an impossible option so steel construction is becoming relied upon even more.
It’s not just office and industrial buildings taking advantage of this material. More and more people are choosing to build residential properties with steel constructions.
The same advantages apply to homeowners; particularly the cost and ease of building. Environmental considerations are important too. These types of homes are increasingly popular in hurricane and earthquake hotspots due to the added safety and decreased potential for damage.
Countries like China and Japan with soaring populations are using steel to create huge housing structures to keep up with demand for affordable housing, and more and more countries worldwide are taking advantage of this lower cost option.
Steel framed construction is an ever growing trend in the building industry and with good reason. It is quickly becoming the option of choice because of its relatively low cost and durability.
