Ski wear for beginners
When beginners think about going skiing they don’t really know until they’ve done it what they need themselves from their ski wear. Each persons total ski wear needs is individual to them but on the whole, ski wear needs to be functional allowing freedom of movement, upto the winter weather it will be worn in and able to be adapted to your own body heat through your performance demands.
Beginners are likely to need as much freedom of movement in their ski wear as freestyle pros but not as much as a fair weather skier. This is because when learning a beginner may spend an awful lot of time side stepping back up the slope they just slid down. Freestlye pros move their bodies into a variety of shapes with their jumps, whereas the fair weather skier just skies fairly effortlessy down a slope without working up a sweat.
The weather the ski wear will be worn in can vary enormously depending on the time of year and even each day. For example it could be crisp, bright and sunny, it could be snowing or even icy and cold. This is why it is a good idea to have ski wear that is in layers so that more can be put on or taken off to match the coldness of the weather. Depending on their level of fitness and effort put into learning, each beginner skier or snowboarder may work up a sweat or at least get quite hot. Therefore, for the most comfort a base layer, such as a vest or t-shirt, that has wicking properties to sweep sweat away from the skin is a worthwhile ski wear investment. If your arms tend to stay fairly warm then you might prefer a short sleeved wicking base layer.
Before beginners go skiing they will probably have a list of what ski wear they are advised to get and it might seem quite a lot initially; ski jacket, ski pants or salopettes, a base layer, ski gloves, ski socks, warm hat, sunglasses or ski goggles and a helmet. And that’s before they add skis or snowboard and boots to the list. Before they actually get to ski they might even have concerns that they won’t enjoy it and are therefore loathe to spend out too much money that could be wasted.
The alternatives then are to ask around and borrow ski wear from friends and family or get some of the ski wear second hand. Borrowing from friends is a good idea because they may have relatively modern gear. The importance of this is that it is likely to give a better performance that keeps you in comfort and therefore means you will enjoy your experience more. Maybe a friend that works out regularly can lend you a wicking t-shirt as a base layer to get your ski wear started.
Although buying second hand ski wear is good for the wallet often the styles or colours that are available may be not at all to your taste. If you can offset this knowing you’ve saved some money on your ski wear then all to the good but if you can’t then you won’t have as much confidence as you need to help you learn a new sport. Knowing you look good in your ski wear helps you feel good and when you feel good you will perform your best. Even if you only invest in your own ski socks, base layer and ski gloves you will have done yourself a favour to get you off the beginner slope enjoying your snow adventure.
